Orcas, bears, salmon, snakes, bison, frogs, songbirds, turtles, cedar trees and many other organisms at risk inhabit these songs, which are performed by Holly and the Dream Band, along with 2800 students from nine schools in Victoria and Vancouver. Orca Baby was written in response to the question: How do you explain extinction to a baby?

Endangered Species points out that humans like to live in the same places as wildlife…which is why so many of them are at risk. Salmon Circle celebrates the ancient cycle of life that has sustained ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest for millennia. Landfill Blues is a raunchy anthem to recycling, reducing, refusing…and to the worms and wasps that do the dirty work of biological decomposition. Recycling a beverage container is an action within the power of a child that helps endangered species.

Cycle of Life/Recycle CD and Handbook for Educators -
National Edition

Written by Holly Arntzen, Chris Fisher, Stephen Foster, Bruce Whittington. Illustrated by Donald Gunn. The Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC) picked up the torch first lit by B.C.’s Encorp Pacific, and sponsored a national edition of the Handbook that can be used across Canada. It includes species from seven terrestrial ecozones: Arctic, Atlantic Maritimes, Great Lakes, Grasslands, Rocky Mountains, Pacific Coastal, Boreal Forests—and three marine ecozones: Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic. The overarching themes are sustainability and ecological footprint. Current environmental science and recycling information, lavish illustrations, Black Line Masters and an innovative teaching guide make the Handbook self-contained and easy to use. Cycle of Life Recycle Handbook   Cycle of Life/Recycle CD and Handbook for Educators
BC Edition

Written by Holly Arntzen, Syd Cannings, Stephen Foster, Bruce Whittington. Illustrated by Donald Gunn. This project was born when Neil Hastie, the CEO of Encorp Pacific, asked ART producer Stephen Foster, “How would you educate children about the importance of recycling beverage containers?” Foster replied, “I’d make the connection with creatures that kids care about. Many children take a teddy bear to bed and talk to it at night. But how many cuddle a pop can? If they understand that by recycling a pop can, they can help their friend the Grizzly Bear, then a lot more containers will find their way into the recycling bins, rather than the garbage can.” Activities in many subjects are linked to song lyrics and make the connections between sustainability, ecological footprint, recycling and reducing our impact on the habitats of endangered species.   Holly Arntzen Salish Sea

Holly Arntzen and the Saltwater Singers sing songs about ocean protection in support of a Marine Conservation Area in southern Georgia Strait, A.K.A. The Salish Sea.  Holly, 500 students from her music programs at Lochside, Durrance, Saanichton, Strawberry Vale, and Bayside schools and Cowichan elder Abner Thorne collaborated to produce the CD Salish Sea to celebrate the rich diversity of our oceans. Featuring guitarist David Sinclair (Sarah MacLachlan), fiddler Daniel Lapp, drummer Graham Boyle (kd lang), and pianist Karel Roessingh, the CD was sponsored by Parks Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Saanich School District 63.

"We feel strongly that this project will be an important tool in helping to raise public awareness of the importance of marine and coastal conservation," says Jim Barlow of Parks Canada. "Innovative public awareness and education tools are needed to get these messages out."

La mer des Salish
Manuel de l'enseignant

Written by Holly, Daphne Macnaughton, Briony Penn, and Gloria Snively, The Salish Sea Educator's Handbook, is a companion guide to the English and French music CDs. It provides activities in music, science and social studies linked to the song lyrics, which fulfill prescribed learning outcomes and teaching standards for grades K-7. Here is a great model resource to show how integrated studies can involve music and other subjects to promote learning about, and conservation of, the local environment. Published by Parks Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, this Handbook includes a copy of the Salish Sea music CD. A full description of the Handbook is posted on the web site of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Holly Arntzen La mer des Salish
The songs from the Salish Sea CD were translated into French by Marie Payette Falls and recorded by 400 students at Ecole Pauline Johnson in West Vancouver.   Holly Arntzen Voices of Nature
Voices of Nature was produced to commemorate the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in South Africa. The CD was released to coincide with the 4th International Children’s Conference on the Environment, hosted by the United Nations Environment Program in Victoria, BC; Holly was the Artist in Residence. 2,000 students from seven schools in Victoria and Vancouver are the “Voices of Nature”. Many of the students are from the Indo-Canadian community, so we asked noted musician Davinder Hundle to translate Voices of Nature into Punjabi; it is titled "Kudrut Lei Gau".

Buffy Saint-Marie kindly gave permission for her song "I’m Going Home" to be translated into Hul’qumi’num, a Salish language, by Cowichan elder Abner Thorne. All cultures have a tradition of respect for nature; singing in other languages is a way to work with visible minorities in Canadian society, in support of the natural world.

Holly Arntzen Running From the Mountains
Classic watershed hits performed by Holly Arntzen and the Watershed Choir. In the fall of 1999, students and teachers at four schools on southern Vancouver Island supported the production of a music CD dedicated to appreciation, knowledge, and positive action on behalf of water stewardship. Holly gave a series of music residency programs, teaching songs to 248 students at Durrance, Beaver Lake, Strawberry Vale, and Spectrum schools. ART’s Stephen Foster coordinated the production and recording, and Lenny Ross of the Colquitz Watershed Stewardship Project developed a curriculum guide to help teachers use the songs to fulfill prescribed learning outcomes. WILD BC funded the program development. Since the CD’s release in December 1999, thousands of people have been directly affected by Running from the Mountains and ART’s musical residency program.
